The best agentic IDEs and AI coding agents in 2026, compared.
There is no single best one: it depends on whether you want a new editor, an agent inside the editor you have, an agent in the terminal, or one app that runs several. Here are 17 of them side by side — platforms, price, which agents and subscriptions they take, and whether they are open source.
Written by Eightcell Labs, the makers of Tesseract — which is listed here, in its group, like the rest. Every other fact links to the tool’s own site, docs or repository, checked on . Prices change often; follow the links for today’s.

Choosing an agentic IDE.
- What is the best agentic IDE in 2026?
- It depends on what you want to change. To switch editors, look at the agent-first editors (Cursor, Devin Desktop, Google Antigravity, Kiro, Zed). To keep VS Code or JetBrains, an agent inside it (GitHub Copilot, Cline, Kilo Code). If you live in the terminal, a terminal agent (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Antigravity CLI, Warp). If you use more than one agent, an app that runs several (Tesseract, Conductor, Goose, AionUi).
- Which agentic IDEs are free?
- Free tiers or free use, as of this check: Cursor (limited), Devin Desktop (light quota), Google Antigravity (weekly limits), Kiro (50 credits), Zed, GitHub Copilot Free, Cline, Kilo Code (you pay for inference), OpenCode, Warp, Goose, AionUi and Tesseract. Claude Code is not on Claude’s free plan; Codex is included in ChatGPT Free.
- Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription in another app?
- ChatGPT: yes, in several — Codex itself, Cline, Kilo Code, OpenCode and Tesseract’s Codex framework sign in with ChatGPT. Claude: Anthropic’s plans cover Claude Code itself and the Claude Agent SDK, but since April 4, 2026 not third-party harnesses such as OpenClaw, which need extra usage. Tesseract runs Claude Code itself, so a Pro or Max plan covers it under Anthropic’s current terms.
- What is the difference between an agentic IDE and a coding agent?
- A coding agent is the part that plans, edits files and runs commands — often a CLI such as Claude Code or Codex. An agentic IDE puts an editor, a terminal and review tools around one or more agents, so you can watch, steer and check what they do.
- What happened to Windsurf, Roo Code and Gemini CLI?
- Windsurf was renamed Devin Desktop on June 2, 2026. The Roo Code extension was shut down on May 15, 2026. Gemini CLI still exists, but since June 18, 2026 it no longer serves personal Google accounts, which Google points to Antigravity CLI.
Use more than one agent?
Tesseract runs Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Cursor’s agent and 8 more in one free app, beside an editor, a terminal and a live preview.
